Video Premiere: Gov't Mule Debuts Live 'Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground'

Beloved American rock band Gov’t Mule — fronted by the Grammy-winning guitar legend Warren Haynes — released its 10th studio album, Revolution Come…Revolution Go last month, a set that the band began recording on Election Day 2016, and which captures via a tracklisting of thoughtful songs the divided political climate currently brewing in the USA.

The band is additionally legendary for its live performance, and Yahoo Music is pleased to have the opportunity to debut a never-before-seen live version of “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” for fans to enjoy.

“This is a ‘live in the studio’ version of our arrangement of the classic Blind Willie Johnson song ‘Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,‘” explains Haynes. “The original recording from 1927, although an instrumental, is considered one of the most haunting Blues recordings in history. I wrote lyrics that are reflective of what’s going on in America today, and we arranged it as a rock song that includes many of the original melodies and chants.”

Gov’t Mule will be touring through the fall. If you’d like to keep up with their schedule, check here.
