Victoria Monét took home one of the Big 4 wins at the 2024 Grammys, as she walked away being this year’s Best New Artist.

Presented by Samara Joy, who won the award in 2023, Monét was joined onstage by members of her team, including her manager, Rachelle Jean-Louis — whom she thanked during her acceptance speech — in addition to her mother, L’Tanya.

Visibly emotional as she wiped away tears, the 34-year-old expressed, “Thank you to my mom. A single mom raising this really bad girl—thank you so much.”

The “On My Mama” singer continued, “I just wanna say to everybody who has a dream, I want you to look at this as an example. Thank you God. This award was a 15-year pursuit.”

Monét reflected on her journey of moving to Los Angeles in 2009 from Sacramento. “I like to liken myself to a plant—who was planted and you can look at the music industry as soil. And it can be looked at dirty or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water and my roots have been growing underneath ground, unseen for so long and I feel like today I’m sprouting above ground. So, I’d like to thank my team of visionaries who could see through that soil. Rachelle, thank you so much.”

Before the music began to cut her off, she turned her attention to her longtime manager.

The mother of one reflected on a binder she made to take to a “really important” label meeting that she ultimately tossed. At the time, she was an independent artist without a team with the hope that her music would speak for itself. However, Rachelle found the binder and took a chance on Monét.

“Thank you so much for seeing me,” the singer continued. In her true, gracious manner, she also praised her fellow nominees. “‘Best’ is subjective, right? We voted for it and I think we’re all the best, but when you look at what ‘best’ means introspectively, I’d like that is what rings true. We are all the best versions of ourselves tonight.”

As she got the cue to wrap up, she joked, “If I know you, thank you!”

In addition to Best New Artist, Monét took home wins for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best R&B Album for JAGUAR II. She becomes the third female R&B artist to win Best Engineered Album, and the LP is the first R&B album to win in nearly 30 years. Watch her full speech below.
