Line of Duty star Vicky McClure is to lead the cast of Paramount+ UK drama Insomnia.

We first revealed details of the Left Bank Pictures series, an adaptation of Sarah Pinborough’s sleep deprivation thriller novel, back in March and casting has now been revealed ahead of a planned 2024 launch. Furthermore, McClure’s production company Build Your Own Films has joined the production.

Also cast are Tom Cullen, Leanne Best, Lyndsey Marshal, Dominic Tighe, Jade Harrison, Corinna Marlowe, Robert Gilbert, Michelle Bonnard, India Fowler and Smylie Bradwell.

It has also emerged Börkur Sigthorsson (The Midwich Cuckoos, Baptiste) will direct Insomnia and joins Andy Harries, Jessica Burdett, Tim Bricknell and Pinborough as executive producer.

McClure will play successful career woman Emma Averill, who fears she might be losing her mind, when her hard-won dream life starts to turn into a nightmare. A couple of weeks before her fortieth birthday Emma stops sleeping — just as her mother had done right before she suffered a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her own fortieth birthday.

McClure is known for her role in BBC cop drama hit Line of Duty, ITV’s bomb disposal thriller Trigger Point and Shane Meadows’ Channel 4 show This Is England.

Cullen (The Gold) will play Emma’s loving husband Robert, while Smylie Bradwell (Wisting) and India Fowler (The Nevers) play Will and Chloe, Emma and Tom’s children. Leanne Best (Bolan’s Shoes) is Emma’s estranged sister Phoebe, and Corinna Marlowe (Hysteria) is Emma’s mother Patricia.

“Myself and BYO Films are really excited to be working alongide Left Bank on Insomnia,” said McClure. “It’s a very different role for me. Sarah Pinborough has written such an exciting script. We have a fantastic cast, crew and production team all set for a very fulfilling few months ahead.”

Charlotte Essex serves as producer. Pinborough is the writer, adapting her novel for screen. Left Banks producing in association with All3Media-backed BYO Films and Sony Pictures Television will distribute the series internationally.

The show forms part of Paramount+’s global strategy to commission 150 international originals by 2025, and joins UK originals such as A Gentleman in Moscow, The Castaways and The Killing Kind, which launches earlier this month.
