Alzheimer's Association offers support group

The Alzheimer's Association of West Texas is hosting a caregiver support group from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month.

The group will meet at the Alzheimer's Association Lubbock Office at 4601 50th St., Ste. 216.

The groups are conducted by trained facilitators and are a safe place for people living with dementia and their care partners.

Bayless-Atkins cleanup set for Wednesday

The Code Administration Department of the City of Lubbock will conduct a Neighborhood Deployment in the Bayless-Atkins neighborhood from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8. The boundaries of this exercise will be 50th Street, Interstate 27, South Loop 289 and University Avenue. A field office will be set up in the parking lot of the new YWCA at 6201 University Ave. to provide information regarding Code Administration activities and City of Lubbock services.

The object of this exercise will be to identify violations relating to Junked Vehicles, Nuisance Weeds and Rubbish, Substandard Housing, and Zoning. Code Administration Inspectors will be talking to the public to provide education regarding these types of violations, citing violations, and possibly abating violations during this exercise.

Veterans Day parade registration under way

The eighth annual Veteran’s Day Parade is set for Saturday, Nov. 11, in downtown Lubbock. Set up is at 8:30 a.m. with the parade beginning at 10 a.m.

The parade is an event designed to pay tribute to all veterans who have served in Lubbock and surrounding communities. The 2023 theme is “Generations of Patriotism”, celebrating the numerous generations and families who continue to serve our country.

Veterans, their family members, marching bands to floats, etc. are encouraged to attend and be included in the parade.

The parade route begins at First Baptist Church at Broadway and Avenue W, moves east on Broadway to Avenue M, then north on Avenue M to the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center parking lot.

Plainview hosting Community Christmas Open House

Downtown Plainview will kick off the Holidays Around the World Community Christmas Open House on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. around the Courthouse Square, 500 Broadway.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. with activities including a variety of vendors, bounce houses, crafts, barrel train rides for kids, holiday lights photo opportunities and extended shopping hours with downtown merchants.

At 11 a.m., the American Legion Auxiliary 260 will hold a Ceremony, Honor Guard Service, and Veteran Display in a collaborative effort to honor local veterans at the Veterans Memorial on the Courthouse lawn. All veterans and family are welcome to attend.

Also, food trucks will be scattered throughout downtown for a variety of dining options. Scheduled to join the festivities include Texas Mac Shack, Rollin’ Woodfire Pizza, El Mercadito, Soda Shack, Porch Swing Eats and Treatz, Dough-Nut Patrol, Sushi Bomb, Doggie Loco and more.

Music events throughout the afternoon include the Plainview High School Choir, Central Elementary 4th Grade Honor Choir, Dan Patterson, Caitlann Butler Music & Entertainment and First Baptist Church Handbells.

The evening will conclude around 6:30 p.m. with closing remarks, announcement of the Lighted Window Contest winners, the arrival of Santa and the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Boys & Girls Club to host HoF dinner

On Friday, Nov. 10, the Lubbock Boys & Girls Club will have its 17th Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Dinner beginning at 11:45 a.m. at the Lubbock Country Club. This year’s inductees are Joe Sanchez, former Optimist Boys Club member; Stan Fry, former ABC Boys Club member; and Winston Gipson, who attended the Ted Phea Boys Club.

They are also presenting Rural Jay Young, a former long time staff with the Vernon Jackson Award, and Coretta Kerr, the first female Board member and Board President, with the A.C. Bowden Award.

Tickets are $50 for individuals and $500 corporate tables of eight seats. Companies can also do a $250 sponsorship if they are unable to attend and would like to show their support. Title Sponsor this year is Whataburger.

Christian Women's Connection to meet

The Lubbock Christian Women's Connection will host its monthly meeting and luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Lubbock Country Club, 3400 Mesa Road.

Meals on Wheels seeks volunteers for added routes

Meals on Wheels of Lubbock is needing to add two more routes and is seeking delivery drivers to help. They are adding about 70 new clients each month and delivering almost 200 more meals each day compared to 2022.

Meals are picked up between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on weekdays. Routes take an average of one hour. You do not have to commit to a regular schedule. Sign-up is easy, just go to https://lubbockmealsonwheels.org/volunteer/ and complete a short application. We hope you decide to become a part of our LMOW volunteer family.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels is a private, non-profit organization, dedicated to preparing and delivering hot, nutritious meals to those who are homebound, elderly, or disabled. LMOW began service in Lubbock in 1971. With the help of over 1,600 volunteers, over 230,000 meals were delivered in 2022. We currently deliver 72 routes in Lubbock and Wolfforth. We receive no government funding and are not a United Way agency.

New Neighbors Club hosting event

New Neighbors Club of Lubbock will hold its annual Game Day and Silent Auction at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Lubbock Women's Club at 2020 Broadway.

The cost is $30 and includes lunch and game prizes. Games include canasta and rummy card games, dominoes, bridge, and Mahjongg. The event is open to the public. For reservations, contact LaFonda Trantham at (806) 778-0351.
