Venus Williams has her Instagram followers stumped. The tennis superstar and sister to Serena Williams kicked her 2020 Instagram activity off in promotional mode – the 39-year-old was promoting well-known brand Clorox.
Venus' photo showed her seated at a wooden table and smiling as she posed with a Clorox wipe in her left hand. The star was stylishly clad in an open pink jacket and low-cut black top.
A caption accompanied the image.
"#ad Many of my matches fall during cold and flu season and I can’t play at my best when I’m sick. That’s why while traveling I take the time to clean and disinfect surfaces with @clorox Disinfecting Wipes to keep germs at bay! How are you staying on top of your game this #FluSeason? #fightbackwithclorox"
Fans Aren't Quite Sure How To React
A power court snap from Venus can easily rake in hundreds of gushing comments, although this post seemed to see Venus' fans a little more divided. While some simply sent love, others appeared to be questioning the post.
":))) do you really need this champ?" one asked.
"Lmao the weirdest ad," another wrote.
"I got the flu vaccine and the pneumococcal vaccine. That's how," a user replied, likely in response to the question asked in the caption.
It's worth noting that Venus did receive plenty of positive feedback, with one fan saying that she's "always gorgeous."
A Sister Deal: Venus Kicks 2020 Off With Amazon Promo
Sister Serena's endorsement grip is somewhat stronger. With 11.9 million Instagram followers (versus Venus' 1.2 million), the 38-year-old sibling to Venus attracts bigger brands.
Serena kicked off the New Year with a paid promotion for online retailing giant Amazon. The snap showed her in the way she's best known – Serena was posing with a tennis racquet and on a court as she announced that she was sharing "everything" she'll be adding to her cart this year.
Venus also ended 2019 with a paid post. The star posed by a suitcase for health brand Asutra Life.
Paid Partnerships: Basically All Of Celebrity Instagram?
The list of celebs raking in the cash with their Instagram endorsements is endless. At the upper echelon and topping 2019's list as highest-paid female influencer was supermodel Kendall Jenner. The 23-year-old earned a staggering $15.9 million last year via Instagram alone.
Also earning big bucks are Selena Gomez with her Coach and PUMA partnerships, Ariana Grande with her Givenchy deal, plus "Wonder Woman" actress Gal Gadot – the Israeli fronts Reebok and Rimmel.
Other talked-about promotions have included Khloe Kardashian's now-deleted Flat Tummy Co. promo – the backlash to that was immense. Similarly slammed, but with less talk, has been "Teen Mom 2" star Leah Messer's brand-new Flat Tummy app promotion.
How Much Was Venus Paid?
Pay correlates directly with following – the more followers you have, the more you earn.
Vox broke it down.
"Influencers with up to 1 million followers can get $10,000 [per post], depending on the platform, and 1 million followers and up, you’re getting into territory where they can charge $100,000. Some can even get $250,000 for a post! Especially if the content is on Youtube and the influencer is in the gaming industry."
Venus' 1.2 million-strong following isn't huge, but it's enough to net her a decent top-up income for a single post.
