Venom: Let There Be Carnage spoilers follow
The sequel to 2018's Venom is finally here and this time, reviews are more positive than the last. Let There Be Carnage currently holds a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though there are still those who find the off-kilter tone a bit alienating (see what we did there?).
We loved it and gave it four stars. But we also acquiesce it isn't everyone's cup of tea. However, fans of other franchises like Spider-Man might be saddened to know that eventually they'll be forced to endure Venom, as a crossover has been teased for a long time.
With Venom: Let There Be Carnage, that crossover seems more inevitable than ever, and it feels like director Andy Serkis is laying the groundwork for it. As we explain how below, this is your final warning for Venom: Let There Be Carnage spoilers.
We were always aware that Venom and Spider-Man took place in the same overarching universe (in the Let There Be Carnage trailer, Detective Mulligan (Stephen Graham) is seen reading the Daily Bugle). However, the post-credits scene has confirmed it one step further.
The final scene of the film shows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom sitting together on a beach, agreeing to become a sort of anti-hero team, fighting crime and eating bad people wherever bad people need eating. Then, in the post-credits scene, the two are in a hotel room (presumably a resort at whatever beach locale they're frequenting) watching trashy TV.
Suddenly, Venom says to Eddie that Eddie has no idea how vast the universe is, and that he is connected to a larger hive mind (to do with being a symbiote) and that he will show Eddie a sliver of his own powers. There are strange noises, and the hotel room shifts into a new universe — presumably, the MCU.
On the TV is J Jonah Jameson (JK Simmons) doing a newscast about Peter Parker (Tom Holland) being confirmed as Spider-Man. Venom licks the TV when the photo of Peter is shown and calls him "that guy."
Serkis has teased that 'that guy' is just the beginning. He told ComicBook.com: "We wanted to leave the audience knowing that these universes are going to somehow collide and we wanted to do it in such a way that it still leaves so much open and we're not timing anything.
"The portal is not being crossed fully. It's opening up more questions, I suppose, rather than sort of firmly saying [anything]... It is a tease. It's a tease, in the fullest sense of the word."
Many behind the scenes at Sony and Marvel have teased a crossover happening, but this is the first true set-up that creates a concrete foundation with which to work. This doesn't mean it will happen, though, given that Holland has teased the "end of a franchise" with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
"I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you'd be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy.
"We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don't know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it."
Maybe that new tone would be a Venom crossover. Given the slapstick nature of the Venom movies, it certainly would be a new direction for the more serious and earnest Spider-Man characters; one we'd be happy to watch.
