Venice According to: Hometown Hero Vincenzo Bugno

What’s the single best thing about the Venice Film Festival?

The relaxed atmosphere of the festival where you can easily combine meetings and watching film. Maybe it has also to do with the end of the summer…or with the wonderful light…and you can go for a swim!

The impact of the Hollywood strikes on Venice will be…

Regrettably fewer Hollywood-stars on the red carpet but maybe more attention for the films themselves and stars from Europe and other continents.

Best place in Venice to avoid the crowds (and the industry) is…

Considering that I’m a born Venetian and dealing with crowds is one of the biggest challenges of the city, I would prefer to keep this secret for myself. But I would suggest: Take a bicycle and explore the Lido.

The one thing I would change about the Venice Film Festival is…

It’s not really about “changing“ and the festival organization isn’t directly in charge … but I think more affordable accommodations for young festival attendees would be a great plus.

The one place you have to go while you’re there is…

I’m a fan of the FC Venezia … also during the Festival I try my best in order to attend a match.

The soccer stadium is a magical place!

The best Venetian food/drink is …

Best food: “capelonghe“… long and thin molluscs. But it’s not easy to find them anymore. Best drink: High quality Prosecco non filtrato from the Veneto-region.

What was your most interesting Venice celeb encounter?

Jeanne Moreau, many many years ago. I met her when she was one of the main characters of [1992’s The Absence] a film by [Nobel Prize-winning novelist] Peter Handke (yes, really). She was beyond impressive.

My worst “Venice nightmare” moment was…

May I tell you the truth? I have been attending the Festival for decades…never had any nightmares.

The one thing I won’t travel without, besides my phone, is…

My Birkenstocks … and this doesn’t prove at all that I’m becoming German! Birkenstocks are a global phenomenon.

My advice for a Venice first-timer is…

Try your best to attend the first screenings of the day. And take a walk on the beach first.

In Venice, you should always…

Take a break a visit a museum. For example the Scuola di San Rocco and enjoying Tintoretto-paintings. Or visit a Biennale exhibition.

In Venice, you should never…

You should never call a square a “piazza.” It’s a “campo” except for “Piazza San Marco.”
