Variety Lands Three 2020 Webby Award Nominations

The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences has announced the nominations for the 2020 Webby Awards, with Variety scoring nods in three categories. Dubbed “Webbys From Home” by event organizers, this year’s ceremony will focus on celebrating both organizations and individuals who have best used the Internet in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Variety has been nominated in best entertainment website and in general social media for entertainment site categories. In addition, Variety garnered a nom in the Celebrity/Fan social category for the “Power of Young Hollywood” series, alongside “Comments by Celebs,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and Jennifer Garner’s “Pretend Cooking Show” on Instagram.

Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood 2019, which honored the brightest young talents in the industry, featured magazine profiles of Camila Cabello, Stephan James and Cole Sprouse and culminated with a star-studded celebration in August.

Webby Award nominees are picked by the academy, which consists of Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, Mozilla chairwoman Mitchell Baker, 23andMe co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki, PBS CEO Paula Kerger, The Ringer founder Bill Simmons, Girls Who Code founder and CEO Reshma Saujani and more. From over 13,000 entries worldwide, fewer than 10% were selected as nominees.

This year, the organizations with the highest number of nominations include Condé Nast (27), Google (24), National Geographic (23), The Washington Post (19), BBC (14), HBO (12), Spotify (12), Luminary Media (10), Vox Media (10), NASA (9), Al Jazeera Media Network (7), Comedy Central (7), Tastemade (5), Complex (5), Facebook (4) and Netflix (4).

All nominees are eligible to win the academy-selected Webby Award as well as the Webby People’s Voice Award, which can be voted on at their website until May 7.

The Webby Awards winners will be announced on May 19, accompanied by a virtual celebration. See the full list of nominees below.
