This year, Nick and Vanessa Lachey’s shared birthday wasn’t just a call for celebration. It was an opportunity for reflection. (ICYMI, spouses Nick and Vanessa have the same birthday, Nov. 9.) On Wednesday, Vanessa posted a heartfelt — albeit slightly sad — tribute to her 42-year-old husband, commenting on how the current political climate was affecting their family.

“Happy birthday to Us, baby,” she began beside a shot of the twosome kissing at the water’s edge with a serene blue ocean behind them. “With everything going on in the country and the world today, I find solace in having a core foundation with you. As we celebrate another year being Americans and being a family, I am reminded by our children that we must continue to have hope and faith for them.” (Nick and Vanessa share two children together, son Camden and daughter Brooklyn, and are expecting their third.) The 35-year-old television host went on to give her two cents on the state of the country the day after Donald Trump became president-elect of the United States.

“Some people are happy today, some people are devastated today, but all of us seem divided,” she explained. “I hope for our country and for our children’s future we can find a way to bridge the gap we have wedged between ourselves and unite on the common ground of being one of the greatest countries in the world.” While she didn’t get into her personal politics specifically, she did call on friends and fans to take action toward healing the divisions she clearly sees in the nation.

“Let’s not forget the sacrifices so many have made for us, and let’s remind ourselves of the possibilities we have as a nation to make a difference. We the people!” she encouraged. “For our Birthday, I want that for our children … hope for a better future. HOPE!” For what it’s worth, they are such an adorable couple, this post gives us hope.
