Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler break up after nearly 9 years together

Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler have called it quits after nearly nine years together, according to Us Weekly.

The longtime couple began dating in September 2011 and reportedly split in the second half of 2019: "Vanessa and Austin are officially broken up, and Vanessa has been telling those close to her about their breakup," an insider told the outlet.

Speculation about the status of their relationship increased during the holiday season: Hudgens, 31, shared plenty of Christmastime photos on Instagram, but Butler, 28, was conspicuously absent from all of them. Hudgens most recently posted a photo with him in Halloween, while his last snap with her dates back to July 2019.

The report comes one day after "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," which features Butler in a supporting role, received a remarkable 10 nominations, including one for Best Picture.

Incidentally, one of the ex-couple's final public appearances together was at the film's LA premiere last summer.

Around the same time as the release of the Tarantino film, it was announced that Butler had landed a coveted leading role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming biopic. The acclaimed director had considered a slew of potential leading men, including Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller, before selecting Butler.

Hudgens publicly celebrated the news, writing on Instagram, "I AMMMM OVERRRR THE F–KING MOOOOOOOOONNNNN ... I CANT WAIT ... SO PROUD OF MY HONEYYYYY!!!"

Tom Hanks is also set to co-star in the biopic, which will be released in 2021. Hudgens also has a film in the works; she just wrapped the sequel to Netflix rom-com "The Princess Switch," which will be due out later this year.

Butler was Hudgens' second high-profile romance: She previously dated her "High School Musical" co-star Zac Efron from 2005 to 2010.
