Vampire Diaries Reunion: Candice King to Star in Julie Plec’s Prime Video Drama We Were Liars

Julie Plec has given Candice King another bloody good role.

King, who played vampire Caroline Forbes on Plec’s The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Legacies, has been cast in the new Prime Video series We Were Liars, our sister site Deadline reports. Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie (The Originals; Roswell, New Mexico) will write and executive-produce.

Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex, Sweetbitter) and Mamie Gummer (True Detective, Emily Owens M.D.) also will star in the drama, which is an adaptation of E. Lockhart’s young-adult novel of the same name.

The series follows the rich Sinclair family, the members of which spend every summer on their private island. King is Bess Sinclair, the youngest of three sisters and a mother of three, herself. She, her marriage and her family all seem perfect. But, per Deadline, “her perfect family image is dangerously close to shattering… and it may be all her fault.”

FitzGerald portrays Penny Sinclair, a high-end-athleisure-clad dog breeder/soon-to-be-divorcee who’ll do anything to keep her family’s wealth and power.

Gummer plays Carrie Sinclair, who was once the most rebellious of the three siblings. Her life has calmed down quite a bit — she now has two sons and is sober — but “during a turbulent summer on her parents’ private island, her sobriety and her ability to be a stable force in her boys’ lives is threatened,” reads the character description.

In addition to Plec and MacKenzie, Emily Cummins (Vampire Academy) and Lockhart will serve as EPs. Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios will produce.
