Valerie Bertinelli found the outfit she had on in her “before” photo as a spokesperson for the Jenny Craig weight-loss program and wore it in an Instagram video posted Monday. The clip, in which a pink shirt and jeans fit her again, was accompanied by her commentary on contemporary diet culture.

“Health is not a body size. Health is not that number you see on a scale,” she said in the post, which you can watch below. “Your worth as a human being isn’t dictated by your body. It’s not defined by your body. I thought I was fat the last time I wore these clothes.”

She shook her head and exhaled deeply. “I’ve never felt more beautiful, more at peace, more mentally and emotionally stable than I do today, and I’m wearing my ‘fat clothes,'” she said, making air quotes around the last two words. “That’s f–ked up.”

TV mainstay Bertinelli (One Day at a Time, Hot in Cleveland) appeared in several commercials for the weight-loss chain, starting in 2007. She also wrote two books on the subject: Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time and Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge. She now is the host of Valerie’s Home Cooking on Food Network.

In 2021, she responded to online criticism regarding her changed thoughts on diet culture and wellness. She made a video about how bad she felt at being told she needed to lose weight, and a commenter replied that the message rang hollow given Bertinelli’s former endorsement deal. “I have been buying into the diet industry my whole life and then I became part of the problem,” the actress replied on X (formerly Twitter). “So here I am today receiving the karma of my actions.”
