Utah Woman Who Had Leg Amputated Following Dog Attack Dies

A 63-year-old Utah woman died on Monday after being attacked by a family of pit bulls on Oct. 31A Utah woman has died a week after being attacked by her son’s dogs.
The 63-year-old woman passed away on Monday, according to a press release from the Taylorsville, Utah Police Department obtained by PEOPLE.
After she was attacked by several dogs in her backyard on Oct. 31, the woman was been treated for critical injuries to her face, hands and legs. Her left leg was also amputated.
She died in the hospital on Monday as a result of the injuries, her family confirmed to police, per the release.
"We feel so badly for this family and we are so saddened by the passing of the victim of this tragic attack," Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam said.
On Oct. 31, the woman was attacked by two adult pit bulls and their five puppies, according to police. She called 911, “as the attack was happening” and reported that she’d been bitten by several dogs in her backyard.
Upon arriving at the scene, authorities reported that the dogs were aggressive towards them, so police “deployed pepper spray to drive them away” and to allow paramedics to respond to the woman’s injuries.
"From there, they were able to get the dogs away from the woman, containing them in a group along the opposite fence,” police said.

The dogs belonged to the deceased woman’s 38-year-old son. He surrendered the animals to a shelter, and they have since been put down as a result of the violent attack.
According to local police, an adult female dog was fatally shot on sight at the scene after breaking loose from the backyard and “endangering” authorities as they were responding to the woman’s 911 call.

The deceased woman’s family released a statement following her death, per FOX13. "Our family would like to thank the dispatcher for staying on the phone with our mother. The police officers that didn't hesitate to get to her as soon as possible. We'd also like to thank the paramedics, nurses, the doctors, the trauma team and everyone that helped our mother," they said. "Thank you for your thoughts and prayers."
Police have said that the investigation into the attack is ongoing.
