‘USS Indianapolis: Men Of Courage’ Trailer: First Look At WWII Survival Tale

The trailer has dropped for USS Indianapolis: Men Of Courage, the feature that recounts an incredible human survival story from World War II when a torpedo forced 900 U.S. Navymen into shark-infested waters where they had to try to survive for five days after what was the worst Naval disaster in U.S. history. The movie, which stars Nicolas Cage, Tom Sizemore and Thomas Jane, was produced by Peter O’Toole’s nephew Francis Gregory O’Toole and Hannibal Pictures’ Richard del Castro and Michael Mendelsohn from a script by del Castro and Cam Cannon. Mario Van Peebles directed the film which recreates the moments before, during and after the ship sank.

Of the 1,197 crewman aboard, 300 died when the ship went down, and 321 were saved from the shark-infested waters as they feared for their lives every moment of the five days. Of those, 317 survived. The USS Indianapolis delivered the makings of the atomic bomb that was used to destroy Hiroshima.

In the making of the feature, the filmmakers interviewed the few surviving members of the Indianapolis; Matt Lanter, a grandson of a survivor, acts in the film. However, he never told producers that his grandfather Kenley Lanter was one of the survivors of the shark attacks until after he was cast. The young Lanter wore his grandfather’s dog tags the entire time on set.
