Usher recently visited Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast where he dished about moments from his illustrious career, as the reigning King of R&B.

Not only did Usher bask in missed movie opportunities and performing at this year’s Super Bowl half-time show, he also revealed that he was almost apart of a supergroup.

When asked if he ever turned down a collaboration that he regretted, he recalled having “secret talks” to form a music collective with some of Hip-Hop’s heavy hitters. “You gon’ hate me for this one,” he began. “JAY-Z, Pharrell, Diddy, and [I] was supposed to be a group. Yeah, that’s crazy.”

Elaborating on why the idea never came to fruition, he added, “I didn’t say, ‘No.’ I didn’t say, ‘Yeah.’ I think that we just got caught up. We all got caught up in the moment. We was talking about it and having secret meetings about it.”

“We was talking about music and how we was gon’ flip it, and the business of it. Somehow, we just got distracted, and it never happened,” he continued. “That’s one that I actually wish would have happened.”

JAY-Z and Usher have a long history of friendship — even so much, that it was Hov who tapped the Confessions icon for one of the biggest moments of his career.

Usher and Jay-Z
Usher and Jay-Z arrive for the world premiere of concert film Jay-Z “Fade to Black”, November 4, 2004 at the Zigfield theater in New York City.

Recalling the moment he received that call for the most important night in football, he said, “JAY-Z, he reached out to me personally. I had an idea that he might be calling. He happened to be coming to town, in Atlanta with the [Renaissance] tour.”

“Every time we’re in Atlanta, we play Spades,” he continued. “I’m thinking he’s getting ready to call me to say, ‘Yo, pull up to the stadium and come get this work.’ He’s like, ‘Nah, I ain’t calling you about Spades. He’s like it’s time. This is the magic moment. This is the Michael moment.’”

The unforgettable moment in music will take place during the 2024 Super Bowl on Feb. 11, as the San Francisco 49ers go head-to-head with the Kansas City Chiefs.
