Alright, fellow This Is Us fans, it’s time we all broke out a pack of tissues. The show recently announced season 6 will be its final season, and after last night’s major plot twist, our hearts are breaking. What’s going to happen with our dearest Pearson family? And when is This Is Us coming back?? NBC can’t just expect us to walk away so quickly from our Big Three!!! Trust and believe, the emotions are clearly off the charts.

But let’s talk about the one silver lining—the end isn’t here just yet. After watching the rather dramatic final episodes of season 5, we already know season 6 will tie up the concluding storylines. Here’s what we know so far about This Is Us’s final season.

This Is Us actually planned to end with season 6 for a while now.

Way back in 2019 when This Is Us was renewed for season 6, creator/showrunner Dan Fogelman revealed that in his vision for the show, it would only run for six seasons total. From his point of view, the whole story wraps up nicely at that point.

“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan,” Fogelman told the Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”

When is This Is Us season 6 happening?

We've had to wait an excruciatingly long time for the sixth season, but the time is finally coming near. NBC has announced that the final season will premiere January 4, 2022.

Are all the cast members coming back?

The NBC gods were so kind to us, because THANKFULLY all of our main cast members are coming back for the final season. Because truly, what would we do without Milo, Mandy, Chrissy, Justin, Sterling, Chris, and Susan?

Do we know what we’ll see from the new season?

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably full of Pearson questions right about now. And with just over a season to do it, the show has a lot to answer. We’ve always known that the family ultimately gathers to say goodbye to Rebecca, but we have no idea where most of the Pearsons are in their lives (or when exactly this is happening).

Are Kate and Toby still together? What about Kevin and Madison? And what’s the deal with Randall and Beth and with Deja, Annie, and Tess now that they’re all grown up? Is Deja still with Malik? Does Tess get her happy ending? There are missing pieces that have to do with Jack and Rebecca, too, so fingers are crossed that the end of the show will bring everything to a satisfying conclusion—and yes, we can assume there will be lots of tears involved.

On Thanksgiving, NBC pretty much confirmed that This Is Us season six would be a nonstop tearjerker when it dropped the deeply-emotional trailer for the final chapter, which will focus heavily on Rebecca coming to terms with the loss of her memories. Do yourself a favor and grab some tissues now before you even press play.

But don’t fret! There’s good news.

If thinking about This Is Us ending so soon is making you cry more than actually watching the show, not all hope is lost! Even if the final episode of season 6 is the series finale, there’s still a chance that we might get to see more of the Pearsons (and the characters in their orbit).

In an interview with NBC in January 2021, Chrissy Metz (who plays Kate) said that the cast is “distraught” about the end of the show coming up, and this might not really be the end.

“Who knows? There might be a spin-off,” she said. “Who knows? Dan might say, ‘Oh, maybe let’s go season 7.’ Who knows? Listen, we haven’t even finished season 5, so I have to stay in today.”

No matter what the future holds, there’s one thing we can all agree on: Season 6 will deliver a hell of a grand finale for the legendary story of the Pearson family. There’s still so much to look forward to, so don’t get too bummed out yet!
