'Once Upon a Time': Behind the scenes of Emma's song

Witches, Dark Ones, and evil curses have nothing on the song in Emma Swan’s heart on Once Upon a Time.

ABC’s fairy tale drama aired a special musical episode toward the end of its sixth season. In “The Song in Your Heart,” Emma (Jennifer Morrison) struggles to fight back against the Black Fairy, and it isn’t until she hears the music embedded deep inside her via mom Snow White’s wish that she truly comes into her own.

The song “Emma’s Theme” is a powerful anthem that allows Emma to realize her parents and loved ones “placed a song inside my heart/ more powerful than you.”

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, songwriters Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary explain how they developed “Emma’s Theme” — which is based on the overall show theme, composed by Mark Isham.

“A really great experience for us was taking Mark’s theme, which is so brilliant, and making lyrics work for it,” they say.

Isham’s theme was first played in OUAT’s pilot, when Prince Charming approaches Snow White’s coffin, and it plays over the end credits of every episode.

And of course, executive producer David H. Goodman adds, “The way Jennifer Morrison performs it is just fantastic.”

Once Upon a Time returns for its seventh season Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
