'Once Upon a Time': 5 things we learned from Lana Parrilla's Build chat

Lana Parrilla is going rock and roll for Once Upon a Time Season 7.

ABC’s fairy-tale drama is getting a bit of a reboot this season, after much of the main cast departed last spring. Now, the show centers on an adult Henry Mills (Andrew J. West), who’s living in Seattle with no memory of who he really is. A new curse has gripped him and several other favorite characters, including his adoptive mom, Regina (Parrilla). Now known as Roni, a bartender in the gritty Hyperion Heights neighborhood, she has no recollection of her past as either Regina or the Evil Queen.

Parrilla stopped by to chat with our friends at Build, and here are five things she revealed about the new season, which premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC.

1. Roni’s got edge
If her punk look didn’t already clue you in, Roni is “a bit rough around the edges.” “She’s kind of been there, done it,” Parilla said. “She doesn’t take any crap from anyone.”

2. Parrilla drew inspiration from Cher
The actress had a lot of say in Roni’s look. “Cher has inspired me, early on in her career, when she did the movie with Eric Stoltz [Mask],” she said. So, gone are the elaborate Evil Queen gowns and Regina’s business pantsuits. “I wanted [Roni] to be more approachable.”

3. Roni does have powers — she just doesn’t know it
“She doesn’t have magic in this world, so that’s a bit troubling,” said Parrilla. “But then she doesn’t know she’s a magical character either, so that’s even more troubling.”

4. Regina just may find a new happy ending
Fans were devastated by the death of Robin Hood, Regina’s true love. But who’s to say that she doesn’t find another one in Hyperion Heights? “I know there’s a lot of people that want to see Regina with someone … maybe it’s a dog!” joked Parrilla, who also gushed about her pet pooch Lola during the half-hour chat. “Maybe Lola’s going to be in the new Once Upon a Time. Once Upon a Bark!”

5. Familiar faces will return
“We have some old characters coming back, and I’m really excited about one in particular, who’s this gorgeous redhead,” she said, referring to Rebecca Mader, who will be returning for a recurring arc as Zelena. “We’re very, very excited.”

Once Upon a Time airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
