The View co-host Sunny Hostin lashed out at Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin on Monday after he tweeted a “reminder” that Catholics should not participate in events during June’s Pride Month celebrating the LGBTQ community.
The bishop took to Twitter on Saturday, writing that the festivities were “especially harmful to children” and “are contrary to Catholic faith.”
A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ “Pride Month” events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.— Bishop Thomas Tobin (@ThomasJTobin1) June 1, 2019
Hostin first responded on Twitter before she aired her grievances on Monday’s show.
This practicing Catholic will be supporting and attending LGBTQ Pride events. And so will my Catholic children. You should be ashamed @ThomasJTobin1 🏳️🌈 https://t.co/tqsyp137Fg https://t.co/RgGeoufXxR— Sunny Hostin (@sunny) June 2, 2019
“My faith always taught me ‘What would Jesus do?’ I know Jesus would be attending that pride parade,” said Hostin. “I also know that God is love and Jesus is love and Love is love.”
Hostin didn’t stop there, drawing gasps from the studio audience when she pointed out what she perceived as hypocrisy given the accusations of sexual abuse lodged against the church.
“For a Catholic bishop to come out and say something like that given the history of pedophilia in the Catholic Church, given what the Catholic Church has hidden about the abuse of children, some would say that being at a pride parade would be much safer for a child than it has been to be in a Catholic Church for many years,” she said.
As a practicing Catholic, Hostin went on to reveal that she’s had her faith tested by the abuse scandals over the years.
“I almost left the Catholic Church because of what has happened,” she said.
Twitter exploded with reactions on all sides of the issue, with some taking issue with Hostin’s perceived attack on the bishop and the church:
My Catholic family will NOT attend any Pride events this month! We don’t need to embrace the LGBT festivities to be good Christians! We don’t judge them & we don’t want to be judged. Furthermore, we support Bishop Tobin & appreciate the guidance he provides to Catholics.— CA4Trump (@CApitt02) June 3, 2019
Wow, this may be the only time I agree with something @WhoopiGoldberg has said.— ✝️💜🇺🇲 A. Rach. (@LifeLoveAR) June 3, 2019
As for @sunny and your comments about the Catholic Church. You might want to get off your high horse and revisit what you said. That is ridiculous.
Others applauded Hostin for her vocal support of the LGBTQ community:
@sunny Great Speach today about Gay Pride!!!! You had me clapping & crying! With the beautiful passion & compassion towards the gay community! Brilliantly said! Thank you for raising ur children w/ love! That’s when the change will really happen! #GodBlessYou #TheView #GayPride— Kingery (@Kingery05828017) June 3, 2019
Father Tobin, who are you to judge ? God loves everyone ! He should have told us to stay away from predator priests— Lisa Johnson (@seabreeze303) June 3, 2019
Fellow panelist Whoopi Goldberg also made her support clear, sending a message of positivity to anyone who may feel discouraged.
“This is what I'm going to tell all of our friends, God loves you,” said Goldberg. “This is about who you are. Be proud about who you are. There's a whole bunch of us standing with you.”
