Sunny Hostin slams Catholic bishop's anti-LGBTQ stance: 'I know Jesus would be attending that pride parade'

The View co-host Sunny Hostin lashed out at Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin on Monday after he tweeted a “reminder” that Catholics should not participate in events during June’s Pride Month celebrating the LGBTQ community.

The bishop took to Twitter on Saturday, writing that the festivities were “especially harmful to children” and “are contrary to Catholic faith.”

Hostin first responded on Twitter before she aired her grievances on Monday’s show.

“My faith always taught me ‘What would Jesus do?’ I know Jesus would be attending that pride parade,” said Hostin. “I also know that God is love and Jesus is love and Love is love.”

Hostin didn’t stop there, drawing gasps from the studio audience when she pointed out what she perceived as hypocrisy given the accusations of sexual abuse lodged against the church.

“For a Catholic bishop to come out and say something like that given the history of pedophilia in the Catholic Church, given what the Catholic Church has hidden about the abuse of children, some would say that being at a pride parade would be much safer for a child than it has been to be in a Catholic Church for many years,” she said.

As a practicing Catholic, Hostin went on to reveal that she’s had her faith tested by the abuse scandals over the years.

“I almost left the Catholic Church because of what has happened,” she said.

Twitter exploded with reactions on all sides of the issue, with some taking issue with Hostin’s perceived attack on the bishop and the church:

Others applauded Hostin for her vocal support of the LGBTQ community:

Fellow panelist Whoopi Goldberg also made her support clear, sending a message of positivity to anyone who may feel discouraged.

“This is what I'm going to tell all of our friends, God loves you,” said Goldberg. “This is about who you are. Be proud about who you are. There's a whole bunch of us standing with you.”
