University have shared a new single, titled “Egypt Tune,” ahead of their debut EP, Title Track, due on November 3rd. Listen to the song below.
University are a fairly new band, and they describe their sound as “like getting punched in the face by a gorilla but then being cuddled afterwards.” Listening to the new single “Egypt Tune,” it’s easy to see (err, hear) why they’d say that.
The first portion of the song is built around a beefy, high-energy riff, with the band’s vocalist snarling over top. Then, an interlude brings the energy down, as a guitar provides a softer lick over what could ostensibly be considered a “cuddling with a gorilla” type arrangement, with a fuzzed-out bass and a hard-hitting kick still providing plenty of beef underneath. Finally, they close the nearly-five-minute-long tune with a reprise of the energetic riff from the beginning. Stream the song below.
For their part, University set the scene for “Egypt Tune” with a press statement. “The year is 3099 BCE,” they wrote. “While searching for ‘the answer,’ University stumbled across something that closely resembled it. This song is not it.”
The single release of “Egypt Tune” also arrives alongside a video of the band performing the song live for a studio session filmed at their rehearsal space (dubbed “The Trap”) in Crewe, England. Stretching a bit longer, the live version features the kind of mosh-inducing energy you’d hope for. Watch the video below.
Title Track is set to drop on November 3rd via Transgressive, and will be available on DSPs as well as on a limited edition vinyl pressing. Pre-orders are ongoing.
