Universal Studios Japan (USJ) logged a record 14.6 million visitors in its fiscal year to the end of March, up 700,000 on the previous year. Numbers were boosted by attractions based on the One Piece manga/anime, Jurassic Park and the continuing popularity of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
USJ, of which NBC Universal is in the process of taking full ownership, celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, with special related events also pulling in the crowds.
Tokyo DisneySea, the sister park to Tokyo Disneyland, also marked 15 years since it opened, but bad weather led to a small drop in visitors, according to operator Oriental Land Co. Combined admissions at the two parks - located in Chiba, just northeast of Tokyo - fell by 0.6 percent to a little more than 30 million, dropping for the second year on the bounce.
USJ has a new area based on Nintendo characters slated to open by 2020, which the company hopes will attract another 2 to 3 million visitors annually.
