Universal has dated Robert Downey Jr.'s turn as Doctor Dolittle, with the as-yet untitled project set to hit theaters on May 24, 2019.
Announced last week, the project is a whimsical retelling of Hugh Lofting's tale of a man with the singular ability to speak to animals. The project is being directed by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and is based on a screenplay by Gaghan and Tom Shepherd.
The film will be produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under their Roth/Kirschenbaum Films (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent), alongside Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Judge) for Team Downey.
Doctor Dolittle first hit the bit screen in the 1967 movie Doctor Dolittle starring Rex Harrison. Eddie Murphy played the role in 1998 for Fox that spawned four sequels.
