Underground season 2 trailer premieres new John Legend song
WGN America’s Underground, the story of fugitive slaves and abolitionists fighting for freedom in the years before the Civil War, has always had an intense relationship with modern music. The very first scene of the show, back in the pilot, played Kanye West’s “Black Skinhead” over a frantic escape scene. The use of relevant modern music will continue into season 2. The new trailer, in fact, premieres a brand new John Legend song, “In America.”
Legend, an executive producer on Underground, will make his first guest appearance on the show as abolitionist Frederick Douglass this season, which looks to be dominated by the arrival of Aisha Hinds’ Harriet Tubman. In this trailer alone, while Legend sings lines like “they say I’m free in America,” Tubman holds two rough-looking enemies at bay by herself, brandishing both a gun and ax. “Don’t be foolish — I aim to end this quick,” she declares.
There are also shots of main characters like Noah (Aldis Hodge), still in confinement after his recapture at the end of last season, and Cato (Alano Miller), in slightly more comfortable circumstances but still determined to use the suffering in his past as a weapon against his enemies.
Legend has some good company on the soundtrack: Beyoncé’s Grammy-nominated single “Freedom” will also be featured in the premiere.
