‘Uncle Vanya’ to Hit Broadway With New Translation By Heidi Schreck

A new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya will play the Lincoln Center Theater this spring.

The classic play will feature a new translation by Heidi Schreck, writer and star of What the Constitution Means to Me, and direction by Lila Neugebauer, who previously directed Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery on Broadway. Uncle Vanya will begin previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on April 2, 2024, with an opening night on April 24.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

The play, first produced in 1899, follows Sonya and her Uncle Vanya, whose lives working on their family farm are interrupted by the arrival of her father and his charismatic wife. It has been produced on Broadway many times, most recently in a 2000 revival with Laura Linney, Derek Jacobi and Roger Rees.

In addition to writing and starring in What the Constitution Means to Me, which was nominated for two Tony Awards and captured on film for Amazon Prime, Schreck has written other plays, including Grand Concourse, Creature and There Are No More Big Secrets and written for television shows such as Nurse Jackie and Billions.

Neugebauer previously directed Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves at Lincoln Center Theater, among other works, as well as several other plays Off-Broadway, including Tracy Letts’ Mary Page Marlowe, Annie Baker’s The Antipodes and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Everybody. She made her directorial feature debut with Causeway, starring Jennifer Lawyrence and Brian Tyree Henry.

This production of Uncle Vanya will feature sets by Mimi Lien, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Lap Chi Chu, and sound by Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.
