An unborn child was killed and mother critically injured during a shooting at a Holyoke, Massachusetts intersection on Wednesday, according to the New York Times, Associated Press and WWLP.

At about 12:38 p.m., a shooting was reported in the 100 block of Sargeant Street, which prompted the Holyoke Police Department to arrive on-scene, per a statement by Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

“It is believed one of the rounds from that altercation struck a public transportation bus and an uninvolved female occupant, who was seated in the bus,” Gulluni wrote, adding, “This victim, who was pregnant, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.”

The infant was delivered and received “life-saving medical services,” but died, he said.

According to a statement issued by the Holyoke Police Department, “multiple victims” were involved and 911 operators received several calls “along with notifications from ShotSpotter” during the shooting.

The three male suspects who appeared to be involved in an “altercation” were believed to have been identified and taken to local hospitals where they are in custody, Gulluni noted.

"I was shocked, I was devastated, I was terrified,” Nelson recalled to the outlet. "That could have been me.”

The witness further explained that there were “about seven or eight gunshots,” noting “as soon as we finished coming through the intersection, the poor girl, she started crying.”

"I ran up the street and I got their attention and told them there was a pregnant girl on the bus that got shot," she added.

“Every life lost to gun violence is a tragedy, especially those taken far, far too soon,” Governor Maura Healey wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “My heart goes out to the victims, families and all of Holyoke in the wake of this afternoon’s senseless shooting.”

Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia said in a statement he was “equally outraged and frustrated” by the incident, adding, "I struggle with it every day attempting to offer a balanced solution. Quite frankly, I have lost my patience. I plan to work with all resources available to me to push this nonsense out of our city."

Hampden County District Attorney's spokesman Jim Leydon did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
