The Umbrella Academy Sets Release Date for Fourth and Final Season

Brellies, your patience has been rewarded: Netflix has at last revealed when The Umbrella Academy will be back for its final season.

Season 4 will drop in its entirety on the streamer on Thursday, Aug. 8, TVLine has learned. Showrunner Steve Blackman previously confirmed that the swan song would span six episodes, a drop from the usual 10 of previous seasons.

The Umbrella Academy‘s third season ended — way back in June 2022 — with the newly created kugelblitz (aka a black hole) devouring the universe as we know it. Sir Reginald attempted to reprogram the universe entirely before it was destroyed, but his process was interrupted by Allison; thus, the remaining Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy siblings were transported to a seemingly half-formed world where they no longer possess their powers.

“There are going to be repercussions, if we’re lucky enough to have a Season 4, of the incomplete programming of the universe,” Blackman told TVLine at the time. “Someone asked me, ‘Why would [Reginald] leave the kids in such a bad place?’ I would argue that he thinks he might be leaving them in a good place. They’ve been complaining about their powers and who they are, and now he’s saying, ‘Look, you’re free. You don’t have powers anymore, there’s nothing holding you back. Live your lives.’ The audience gets to decide whether Hargreeves did a good or bad thing for them.”

Netflix previously gave fans the tiniest glimpse of new Season 4 footage in the above sizzle reel, starting at the 31-second mark. (Don’t blink!) But we have yet to meet the characters played by new cast additions Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and David Cross (Arrested Development); find out more about their roles here.
