The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer teases super battles, a time paradox — and a surprise return

The first full-length trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3 is finally here — and wouldn't you know it, the superpowered siblings are once again trying to avert an apocalyptic time paradox.

After their trip to '60s Dallas in season 2, the Hargreeves siblings thought they had managed to avert two apocalypses at once. But when they returned to the present day in the final moments of the season 2 finale, the Umbrella Academy found themselves face-to-face with the Sparrow Academy: A different set of superpowered siblings that their patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) adopted instead after being disappointed by his meeting with the Umbrellas in the '60s.

As Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) helpfully explains in the new trailer, the presence of both the Sparrows and the Umbrellas in the same timeline has created a new kind of paradox that threatens everything. Unfortunately, his eccentric siblings have other concerns like: Would you kill your alternate-timeline self if you met them, or try to have sex with them? If we kill this new, meaner, Sparrow Academy version of Ben (Justin H. Min), will the kinder Umbrella Academy version return?

The Sparrows are clearly an impressive bunch; as Diego (David Castaneda) complains at one point, "we've been replaced by a bunch of blobs and cubes and birds and s---!" But three seasons in, the Umbrellas are also well-aware of their own strengths. "I ended the world twice," Viktor (Elliot Page) tells a clearly unnerved Marcus (Justin Cornwell). Later, Number Five uses his teleportation powers to punch out Jayme (Cazzie David) from behind.

Fans of The Umbrella Academy comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá should be especially intrigued by the shot of a building called the Hotel Obsidian. Doesn't that sound quite a bit like Hotel Oblivion, the third and most recent volume from Way and Bá's Dark Horse comic? Hmm.

On another intriguing note, the trailer ends by teasing a surprising return. It looks like Pogo (Adam Godley), the talking monkey who narrates the show's setup and assisted Sir Reginald throughout the children's youth, has come back to life in this new timeline — and Number Five wants his help.

To find out why, watch The Umbrella Academy season 3 when it hits Netflix on June 22 — and stay tuned for more coverage on EW.
