Ukraine’s artillery shell expenditure outstrips US production

According to pervious media reports, Ukraine remains hampered by a lack of artillery ammunition of various calibers.

U.S. Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth reported that the U.S. defense industry can currently produce about 14,000 155-mm howitzer shells per month, although manufacturing is planned to expand in the coming months.
On Dec. 15, Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that during the current war unleashed by Russia, ammunition is consumed at a rate similar to that of WWII.

U.S. newspaper The New York Times earlier reported that smaller NATO member states have already exhausted their potential to supply arms to Ukraine. According to the article, NATO countries are discussing investments in old factories in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bulgaria to resume production of 152-mm shells for Ukraine’s remaining Soviet-era artillery systems.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously called on the alliance to increase arms production to support Ukraine, as NATO has exhausted much of its stockpiles of weapons and ammunition.
