UCLA Josh Rosen yet to clear concussion protocol but will 'absolutely' play vs. Arizona State

UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen says he feels “great” after sitting out the Bruins’ game vs. Utah because of a concussion, though the quarterback hasn’t officially cleared UCLA’s concussion protocol just yet.

Rosen said Wednesday he suffered a concussion as he was sacked during UCLA’s game vs. Washington on Oct. 28. He’s practiced both Tuesday and Wednesday and “absolutely” believes he’ll play Saturday vs. Arizona State.

Mora said the team his “hopeful” to have Rosen back. Redshirt freshman Devon Modster started in his place at Utah and suffered a broken thumb.

“He’s had two good days of practice but he’s still, I believe, not completely cleared to play,” Mora said of Rosen. “There’s part of a protocol that he has to go through and I believe he has to pass through the final step.”

Rosen, who said he started feeling concussion symptoms after halftime, also said he was frustrated with the comments made by ESPN analyst Brock Huard during the game. Huard, clearly unaware that Rosen had suffered a concussion, was wondering how NFL scouts would view Rosen’s toughness if he was missing part of the second half because of an injury to his non-throwing hand. When asked about Huard’s remarks last week, Mora didn’t have many kind things to say about the former Washington quarterback.

Rosen said the blood on his throwing hand was from a simple cut.

“It didn’t hurt at all,” Rosen said. “I don’t know why everyone went crazy off of that. But that didn’t even hurt. It was just blood they were cleaning up, because you don’t want your whole jersey looking red.”

UCLA’s game vs. Arizona State is a likely must-win for bowl purposes. The Bruins are 4-5 and have games vs. the Sun Devils, USC and Cal remaining.
