UCF fans put up billboard in Tuscaloosa asking for series with Alabama (Photo)

Central Florida fans are feeling really good these days.

UCF was the only FBS team to go undefeated this season, finishing 13-0 after beating Auburn in the Peach Bowl. The school has since declared itself the 2017 national champions — and are celebrating as such. Meanwhile, Alabama knocked off Georgia in the College Football Playoff title game to win the actual national championship.

It certainly would be fun to see how UCF would stack up against the Crimson Tide, but that won’t happen this season. UCF fans are hoping it will in the future, however. Check this out:

Yes, that is a billboard in Tuscaloosa — paid for by UCF fans — essentially challenging Alabama to a home-and-home series with the Knights.

Alabama hasn’t played a non-conference home-and-home since it played Penn State in 2010 and 2011. The Tide swept that series and is 49-6 against non-conference foes during Nick Saban’s tenure. The non-conference games on Alabama’s future schedules are either set for neutral sites (Louisville in Orlando, Duke and Miami in Atlanta) or Bryant-Denny Stadium.

It’s nice to aim high, UCF fans, but a future series with the Tide probably won’t happen (cries of “We Want Bama!” never go well anyway). And it’s kind of a shame, really. A big part of the reason UCF was ranked No. 12 in the final College Football Playoff rankings (UCF moved up to No. 6 in the final AP rankings) was its schedule. Before the Auburn game, the Knights beat their only other Power Five opponent, Maryland, 38-10. Another game, against Georgia Tech, was canceled because of Hurricane Irma.

UCF AD Danny White thinks the American Athletic Conference deserves more respect than it gets from the CFP selection committee, but it’s pretty much impossible at this point for any Group of Five team to make the four-team playoff field without some really marquee names on a schedule.
