Tyra Banks Tried Alcohol For The First Time At Age 50

Tyra Banks turned 50 back in December, and she celebrated by having her first alcoholic drink.
Despite the former supermodel being eager to honor her life milestone in Australia, she told PEOPLE the drink she took “wasn’t worth it.”
“My mama [and] my best friend surprised me there, and it was so magical,” said Banks. “We took a seaplane, had a meal in the middle of nowhere in some jungle. I had an alcoholic drink for the first time! I’ve tasted alcohol, but to have a drink for the first time at 50? […] It wasn’t worth it. I was like, ‘This is nasty!’”
When later gushing about being 50, the former America’s Next Top Model host declared, “I could not wait to be 50. I felt it was a rite of passage to be my true self. I like to challenge misconceptions about aging by saying, ‘Child, I’m 50!’”
She remembered being younger and considering 50 to be “granny old,” but then mentioned the likes of Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Julia Roberts looking fabulous and now feels they’ve “flipped the script” on aging.
“50 feels good,” the mother of one added. She reveled in how she now has an uniform, confessing, “Yes, I was a fashion model, but I don’t care about no clothes child. I could give a damn. And I said goodbye to heels about two years ago. They ain’t my friend no more.”
Banks concluded by urging women to embrace the “natural beauty” of aging while she embraces the freedom it comes with. “I have bitten my tongue, said the right thing, try to please everybody my entire life. And now, I speak my truth. I demand respect. And it feels good. I can’t wait until 60 comes along because I’m probably going to be cursing everybody out,” she joked.
These days, the Life-Size star can be found living and working in Australia with boyfriend Louis Bélanger Martin and her eight-year-old son, York, whom she shares with ex Erik Asla.
