Tyra Banks Praised These A-List Stars for Changing the Perception of Aging in Hollywood

Tyra Banks turned 50 at the end of 2023 and she’s using her platform to tell other women that it’s OK to talk about aging. There has been such a stigma around women getting older, especially in Hollywood, so the supermodel is making sure to use her power after watching two other A-list stars pave the way for her.

It may seem like a small detail, but Banks admitted to People that letting her gray roots show through is something that was previously seen as beauty faux pas. “I remember back in the day that gray hair was like, oh, you just hid that. You did not show that that was a no-no,” she explained. “Now I see women saying. ‘I am gray. And not only is that okay, it’s amazing, it’s beautiful.'” Banks has a few major celebs to thank for changing her perceptions about aging.

“When I look at Sarah Jessica Parker with her gray streaks through that blonde ombre hair, she’s popping. Andie McDowell, you are just a gem. And I find it to be so amazing,” Banks praised the women. “I have on fake hair right now and my fake hair doesn’t have gray hair in it, but my real hair does. And I walk around town with my natural cornrows, with my gray edges tamed with a little baby hair juice, but not with dye.”

Parker rocked the fashion world with her December 2021 Vogue cover with her silver roots shining through, but she also called out the ageism that permeates social media and society. “‘Gray hair gray hair gray hair. Does she have gray hair?’ I don’t know what to tell you, people,” she told the magazine. “Especially on social media. Everyone has something to say. ‘She has too many wrinkles, she doesn’t have enough wrinkles.’ It almost feels as if people don’t want us to be perfectly okay with where we are as if they almost enjoy us being pained by who we are today, whether we choose to age naturally and not look perfect, or whether you do something if that makes you feel better.”

Banks aligns deeply with Parker’s sentiments “because today we celebrate women, and we still have a long way to go.” She added, “But we are getting there to where we feel good and not ashamed of the changes and the natural beauty that our body goes through.” That’s why the former Dancing With the Stars host feels like aging is “a rite of passage” to be her “true self.” She’s going to speak her truth and “challenge misconceptions about aging.” Watch out, world!
