Fans hoping to learn how Tyler Perry went from being homeless to one of the entertainment industry’s leading moguls are in for a treat. Amazon Studios has released the official trailer for Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, taking an intimate look at the 54-year-old’s life and career.

Produced by Gelila Bekele, Jasmine K. White, and Asante White, and directed by Bekele and Armani Ortiz, the documentary is set to premiere on Nov. 17 on the streaming platform, available to stream in more than 240 countries and territories globally.

“What filmmaker has had five movies open number one at the box office in the last four years? Spielberg? Tarantino? Scorsese? No. This record belongs to Tyler Perry,” reveals an archival clip at the beginning of the trailer.

According to the official description, Maxine’s Baby is “a nod to his mother’s love, is a tender and intimate portrait of visionary and innovator Tyler Perry and his harrowing-but-faithful road to the top of an industry that didn’t always include him.”

“All these people told me what I would never be. Nobody had said what I could be,” explains the Madea franchise creator in the clip. “What I will not do is change because some critics think it’s not art.”

Maxine’s Baby has been in the works for 10 years. The project exists outside of Perry’s four-picture film deal with Amazon Studios signed in November 2022. The PG-13-rated documentary runs for nearly two hours. Watch the trailer for Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story above.
