In 2021, an Amish couple was killed after their horse-drawn buggy was rear-ended by a pick-up truck in Virginia. The crash happened in Cumberland County in October of that year.

Barbie Esh, 38, and husband John Z. Esh, 39, were killed as a result of the collision with a 2005 Toyota Tundra, Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

The mother was pronounced dead at the scene. The father later died at VCU Medical Center.

The couple’s eight children were also injured in the crash. Their ages ranged from 9 months to 16 years, Geller said.

CBS affiliate KIRO 7 also reported that the horse pulling the buggy was euthanized because of the injuries it sustained.
