Two males die in separate weekend crashes on Deming streets

DEMING – Deming streets turned deadly this past weekend in two separate crashes. Deming Police responded to calls on Friday and Saturday resulting in the death of two Deming males.

On Saturday, Dec. 4, at approximately 5:39 a.m. officers were dispatched to the intersection of Fourth and Diamond streets in reference to a pick-up truck involved in an accident. When officers arrived, they found the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, Jesus Garcia, 21, of Deming, suffering from a neck injury. A 21-year-old male passenger was uninjured.

EMT’s rushed Garcia to Mimbres Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Deming Police preliminary report indicated the truck driven by Garcia had struck two parked vehicles and crashed through a fence. A fence post appears to have broken through the windshield, causing Garcia’s injury.

Deming police said speed appears to have been a factor.

On Friday, Dec. 3, at 5:26 p.m., a 2010 Chrysler 4-door sedan was traveling south on Gold St. At that same time, a 2018 dirt bike was traveling in front of the Chrysler at a low rate of speed. The dirt bike, driven by 68-year-old James Higgins of Deming, had two small lights in front of the bike in a low-light setting just after dusk.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 64-year-old male resident of Deming, did not see the dirt bike in front and in the dark and rear-ended Higgins, causing the crash. Higgins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deming police told the Headlight the dirt bike was not legal for street use and the Chrysler was traveling at the speed limit.
