Two Fathers Brought to Tears on ‘The Voice’

It was an emotional night on The Voice as two fathers did their best to make their families proud. First up was 23-year-old Malik Davage, who had a rough childhood growing up with his dad in prison. With a toddler of his own now, Malik wanted to give his little girl everything he didn’t have and more.

During the interview package, Malik said, “My daughter is the most special thing to me,” adding, through tears, “I just want to do better for her.”

Malik then hit the stage to sing “Sure Thing” by Miguel. And while Adam Levine was the only coach to turn his chair, that was all Malik needed. After the performance, Malik broke down in tears again, and Gwen Stefani offered him a shoulder to cry on, which he immediately accepted. His new coach, Adam, joined in on the hug and then had Malik sit in his red chair to relax. That’s when Malik let the judges know why he was there, saying, “I’m just a young guy from Washington, D.C., just trying to do what’s best for my daughter.”

Another guy trying to do the best for his daughters was 40-year-old Josh Hoyer, who has been juggling his music career with being a dad. Josh said, fighting off tears, “It’s extremely difficult financially to make it work as a touring musician. You’re gone so much … And that’s something you battle with.”

Josh’s performance of “Oh Girl” by the The Chi-lites got Gwen and Blake Shelton to turn their chairs. After the two lovebirds fought for his love, Josh went with Blake as his coach. He explained his choice by saying, “Gwen, she was speaking some truths to me, and I was like, ‘Oh, I hear you.’ But as far as where I’m at as a musician, I think the wiser decision was with Blake,” and then Josh got a kiss on the cheek from one of his little girls.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
