Twitter suddenly got patriotic after USA beat Canada in the gold medal game

The United States of America won a gold medal in ice hockey for the first time in 20 years, and it literally couldn’t have been a closer finish. Despite playing the better game throughout, including through the entire overtime period, the Team USA women found themselves tied 2-2 with Canada at the end of OT, forcing the dreaded shootout.

It all came down to Maggie Rooney’s save on Canada’s sixth shootout goal, sealing the win and the gold for a country that was desperate for an iconic moment at the PyeongChang Olympics — and a reprieve from pervasive negativity that has followed Lindsey Vonn throughout her final Games.

The American women ended their greatest rival’s gold medal streak, so while it may not totally rival the iconic Miracle on Ice from 1980, that team’s legendary goaltender was as ecstatic as the rest of us.

Mike Eruzione, the captain of the legendary team, chimed in the next morning.

Fellow American Olympians, the bronze medal-winning Shib Sibs, also couldn’t reign in their excitment.
