Twisters might be all tornadoes wrecking the Earth, but at the heart of it is a good banter romance, and that’s what Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have got going on in the latest trailer shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.

That gal-guy back and forth was what was also at the heart of the original 1996 Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.

“You think you can interrupt a tornado,” Powell’s cowboy tornado chaser asks Edgar-Jones’ city girl.

“In theory,” she answers, “in the field and in the moment, I got it wrong. We never had a chance.”

“You want one?” Powell asks, giving her an invitation for a good time.

Director Lee Isaac Chung introduced the footage today during Universal’s presentation at Caesars Colosseum for what he said was his first CinemaCon. He explained he chose to move away from his indie film roots for Twisters because when he was growing up in the Midwest, “tornadoes were part of our reality.” He praised the 1996 movie and said its director Jan de Bont is “underappreciated. … He did what movie theaters are supposed to do — bring audiences up close to things that are bigger than us, that bring us fear, awe and reverence. I was really scared and wanted to run directly into my fear than away from it.”

Chung recounted that executive producer Steven Spielberg is “an absolute tornado fanattic. … If you made a tornado video and put it on YouTube, he has seen it.”

“We really tried to make this as immersive and real as possible. … We even sent stormchasers out to get footage for us. … This is meant to be a joyful, fun ride. I know there is lot of pessimism about the environment, but if we can bring audiences a sense of joy and awe about the natural world” then maybe that can help, he said.

Stars Powell, Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos then came to the stage for a “demonstration” of what they had experienced during shooting. Said Powell, “We all signed on thinking we were gonna be on a soundstage covered in dots,” but instead had “a jet engine hitting us with ice” among other things.

Pic’s script is by Mark L. Smith. The film is co-financed by Warner Bros which is handling overseas distribution. Universal will release domestically July 19, with international rollout beginning July 17.

Supporting cast includes Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney and Katy O’Brian.

The original Twister was a massive hit in 1996, grossing nearly $500 million globally thanks in no small part to the film’s groundbreaking special effects. The movie followed a pair of stormchasers who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. Pic was helmed by Speed director de Bont and executive produced by Spielberg, with a screenplay by author Michael Crichton.
