Mel Giedroyc and Martin Clunes for Britain by the Book
Mel Giedroyc and Martin Clunes for Britain by the Book

You’ll be rushing to ‘book’ a holiday to Dorset as entertaining travelling companions Mel Giedroyc and Martin Clunes showcase how the beautiful county has provided inspiration for countless authors. After dressing up as The French Lieutenant’s Woman in Lyme Regis, Mel takes Martin on a boat trip, but when he reads some Thomas Hardy to her, she’s left feeling seasick! The duo also celebrate Enid Blyton’s Famous Five on a steam train, talk to writer Raynor Winn about her bestseller The Salt Path and guzzle Dorset cider. But the highlight of the fun-filled road trip is watching the good pals frequently dissolve into giggles as they exchange cheeky banter!

Annika, 9 pm, Alibi/NOW

The literature-loving detective gets a well-earned minibreak at an eco resort this week, courtesy of daughter Morgan (Silvie Furneaux), who’s doing work experience there. But the hidden cost is that Annika (Nicola Walker) has to spend the holiday with her father Magnus (Sven Henriksen), who is emotionally distant, to put it mildly. So she’s somewhat relieved when a builder working at the resort is discovered dead in the river and her awkward family reunion becomes a working holiday. Another delightfully zig-zagging investigation ensues, with the added bonus of the most thrilling game of chicken we’ve seen in a long while.

Justified: City Primeval, Disney Plus

Timothy Olyphant in Justified: City Primeval
Timothy Olyphant in Justified: City Primeval

Hailed as ‘one of the best series of the 2010s’, this neo-western makes its long-awaited return, with Timothy Olyphant back as Raylan Givens, the deputy US Marshal enforcing his own brand of justice. Having left Kentucky, Raylan’s now living in Miami, juggling life as a lawman with being father to his 15-year-old daughter Willa (played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian Olyphant), when a hostile encounter on the highway sends him to Detroit and on a collision course with a violent sociopath. The opening scene featuring Raylan dealing with hoodlums the only way he knows how, with the added jeopardy of trying to keep his daughter safe, sets the tone for what’s sure to be a thrilling ride.

Geordie Hospital, 8 pm, Channel 4, Channel 4 On Demand (box set)

The medical series following the staff at Newcastle Hospitals Trust is back. And although it doesn’t have the intense drama of shows such as Ambulance or 24 Hours in A&E, it’s full of lovable characters and warm-hearted stories. Tonight, endovascular surgeon Craig battles to treat 79-year-old John’s aneurysm, knowing he only has a 50-50 chance of survival, while orthopaedic surgeon Malik gets emotional performing a complex ankle replacement on 25-year-old Lauren, who has juvenile inflammatory arthritis, but Malik discovers Lauren’s bones are more damaged than expected.

Main One Piece cast, from left to right: Sanji (Taz Skylar), Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu Arata), Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Nami (Emily Rudd), and Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson)

All aboard for Netflix’s live-action and action-packed seafaring show, based on Eiichiro Oda’s acclaimed manga series. The eight-part comedy adventure stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, an unflappable dreamer with supernatural rubber-like properties, who is determined to find the fabled piece of treasure and become king of the pirates.

As leader of a ragtag band of misfits known as The Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy and his shipmates on the Going Merry use their distinct skills to defend themselves against unpredictable villains such as deranged clown pirate Buggy. Starring Jeff Ward, Emily Rudd and Craig Fairbrass. Narrated by Ian McShane.

The Little Mermaid, Disney Plus

Halle Bailey as Ariel underwater in Disney's The Little Mermaid
Halle Bailey as Ariel underwater in Disney's The Little Mermaid

While a racist backlash to the casting of Ariel dominated headlines about this live-action remake of the 1989 classic, the real news is that Halle Bailey is delightful in the role. She is cheeky, has a mellifluous singing voice as demonstrated in Part of Your World and has sweet chemistry with Jonah Hauer- King, who plays Prince Eric, the human Ariel gives up the sea for. Awkwafina provides comedy as the voice of gull Scuttle, while Javier Bardem hams it up as King Triton, Ariel’s protective dad. The adaptation remains faithful to the original’s spirit while adding songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the underwater scenes are a technical feat. As crab Sebastian sings, ‘What more is you lookin’ for?’.
