Crime season 2, ITVX (box set)

Ray Lennox in Crime series 2
Ray Lennox in Crime series 2

A welcome return for the stylish Irvine Welsh crime drama, starring Dougray Scott as traumatised Edinburgh cop Ray Lennox. Last seen being put on gardening leave after bringing paedophile ‘Mr Confectioner’ (John Simm) to justice, an apparently revitalised Lennox is back at work and comes to the aid of trans woman Lauren, formerly his colleague, who was assaulted during a suspected burglary at her friend Gayle’s flat. Meanwhile, an alleged assault at a hotel appears to be linked to former sex worker Gayle and a high-profile sugar daddy, but the inquiry is soon shut down by a government lawyer. A winning combination of black comedy, sharp dialogue, cover-up conspiracy and personal demons.

Taskmaster season 16, 9 pm, Channel 4

Another batch of comedians take on more weird and wonderful challenges as the hugely entertaining comedy game show returns for a 16th series. As always, the five contestants must also endure withering put-downs from the Taskmaster himself, Greg Davies, assisted by his co-presenter, ‘Little’ Alex Horne. Those hoping to walk away with the title of series champion this time are Julian Clary, Sue Perkins, Meet the Richardsons’ Lucy Beaumont, Year of the Rabbit’s Susan Wokoma and Bloods’ Sam Campbell. But their first bizarre task is particularly tricksy and earns Alex a volley of abuse – though he must be used to that by now!

Best box set on TV tonight

Mad Men, UKTV Play (box set)

Mad Men Jon Hamm
Mad Men Jon Hamm

The brilliant period drama about a New York advertising agency, which originally aired on BBC Four, is available to stream for free on UKTV Play from Tuesday, September 19. Mad Men follows the fortunes of Sterling Cooper and its many incarnations, from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. In the role of genius ad man Don Draper, a character whose complicated history unfolds throughout the series, Jon Hamm became the breakout star, but it’s really an ensemble piece with a great cast including Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery, Christina Hendricks and Jared Harris. The recipient of numerous Emmys, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, it will no doubt remain a fixture on ‘greatest ever TV’ lists for many years to come (why not check where it placed on What To Watch's Top 100 TV shows list?).
