Best TV shows on TV tonight

All Creatures Great and Small, season 3, 9 pm, Channel 5

We return to Skeldale House for a new series.
We return to Skeldale House for a new series.

Wedding fever has hit Skeldale House as James (Nicholas Ralph) and Helen (Rachel Shenton) prepare for TV’s most-anticipated nuptials in the return of the beautifully nostalgic vet drama. But the big day doesn’t exactly go without a hitch as James gets embroiled in a medical crisis on the morning of the wedding. Meanwhile - perhaps unwisely! - Tristan has been appointed best man but, unsurprisingly, his big brother Siegfried doesn’t think he’s quite up to the job and decides to interfere… With just the right blend of heartfelt and hilarious moments and unsettling hints that war is on its way, this really is a perfect series opener.

My Grandparents' War, 9 pm, C4

Kit Harington returns to Italy where his grandfather Mick won a Military Cross
Kit Harington returns to Italy where his grandfather Mick won a Military Cross

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington’s screen roles pale into insignificance as he
finds out about the wartime exploits of his four grandparents in this fascinating documentary. Kit’s paternal grandfather John worked for Naval intelligence where one of his colleagues was future James Bond creator Ian Fleming. John’s wife Lavender was also in the spying game – reading letters to see if they contained coded messages from German agents. Kit’s maternal grandfather Mick Catesby won a Military Cross for bravery fighting in the pivotal Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, while his wife Pippa was a nurse in Exeter during the war.

Ambulance, 9 pm, BBC One

Paramedics Phil and Paula.
Paramedics Phil and Paula.

One of the many things to love about this series is how it shows the real impact the work paramedics and call handlers do. And how dealing with tragedy, death and desperation on a daily basis doesn’t make it easier to cope with – they are just very good at keeping on going and supporting each other. Tonight, Paula and Phil treat a suicidal patient who takes a turn for the worse in the back of the ambulance, an 84-year-old with breathing difficulties and another elderly patient whose dog saves the day.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Cobra Kai, season 5, Netflix

William Zabka, Ralph Macchio and Yuji Okumoto as Johnny, Daniel and Choze
William Zabka, Ralph Macchio and Yuji Okumoto as Johnny, Daniel and Choze

The spin-off from The Karate Kid has been one of Netflix’s most popular shows since it debuted in 2018. In season five, the action picks up after Terry Silver cheated his way to victory in the All Valley Tournament, forcing the Miyagi-Do dojo to close. With Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) now trying to expand his Cobra Kai dojos, can Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his former enemy Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) stop Silver? This season also sees a sidelined Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) on his own mission in Mexico.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

The Elephant Man, 9 pm, BBC Four

A brilliant evocation of Victorian London by that master of the weird, David Lynch. Even buried under pounds of sculpted latex, and entirely unrecognisable, John Hurt delivers a heartbreaking performance as the grotesquely deformed John Merrick, who was rescued from a life as a sideshow attraction by surgeon Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins at his most sensitive) and given a new home in the London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Live Sport

  • Women's International T20 Cricket, England vs India, 6 pm, Sky Sports Main Event/NOW

  • UEFA Europa League, Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven, 7.15 pm (k-o 8 pm), BT Sport 1
