Best TV shows on TV tonight
Casualty, from 8:30 pm, BBC One
The efforts of Max (Nigel Harman) to keep his ill health secret unravel spectacularly in a Casualty double bill tonight. In the first visit to Holby, he collapses in his office. Enter Dylan (William Beck), who insists on taking over his care and discovers that old Maxxie Boy has been lying for months – without dialysis or a transplant, he’ll be dead in a year.
A sobering thought, but not one that stops Max from hooking up with Donna (Jaye Jacobs) over a couple of bottles of wine after their shift. Will he see sense when his mum Stella (EastEnders’ Kate Williams) makes her presence felt in the second episode?

Parkinson: The Interviews, from 10.25 pm, BBC Four
The series of Michael Parkinson interviews – which has seen Saturday nights on BBC4 rescheduled since he died, aged 88, last month – continues this weekend. The consummate chat-show host and broadcaster was a towering figure on Saturday nights for many years, so this seems the right place to find him.
In The Dr Jacob Bronowski Interview, he talks to the presenter of The Ascent of Man, the groundbreaking 1970s series (available on iPlayer), with Hollywood Women following (11.35pm), in which Parkinson chats to Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis and Ingrid Bergman. You can find other interviews including Muhammad Ali and Billy Connolly on iPlayer, along with the 2021 tribute Parkinson at 50.

Fantasy Film Music at the Proms, 5:50 pm, BBC Two
There are few more stirring sounds than the epic title music to Game of Thrones, just one of the classic soundtracks featured in this sold-out Prom, recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall last Monday night. Anna-Maria Helsing conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Huddersfield Choral Society in an evening that takes the theme of fantasy, myths and legends.
Other featured pieces include music from the Harry Potter films and The Lord of the Rings as well as TV’s His Dark Materials and animation from Studio Ghibli including My Neighbour Totoro. Hannah Waddingham presents.

Girl Groups Night, from 7:40 pm, BBC Two
OK, if you want to feel really old, next year it’ll be 30 years since the Spice Girls formed. They’re in BBC2’s line-up of programmes celebrating girl groups, with a compilation of their BBC appearances (11.45pm), including hits Who Do You Think You Are, Too Much and Spice Up Your Life.
The evening, which kicks off with TOTP: Girl Groups, also features new compilation Bananarama at the BBC (8.40pm), a 2008 performance by Girls Aloud from London’s O2 (9.40pm) and Labelle in Concert (11.15pm).

Best box set on TV tonight
Who Is Erin Carter? is an excellent question – and you’ll want to stick with this action-packed thriller to find out the answer! Erin (Evin Ahmad) is a Brit abroad, working as a teacher in Barcelona. But after Erin and her daughter Harper (Indica Watson) get caught up in a robbery in the supermarket and Erin expertly disarms one of the robbers with just the groceries she can lay her hands on, it’s clear she’s more than just a teacher.
As word of her heroism spreads, people start asking awkward questions – and Erin gets deeper into trouble. The star-spangled cast also includes Douglas Henshall, Denise Gough, Susannah Fielding and Jamie Bamber.

Best film on TV tonight
Lucy, 10:35 pm, ITV4
A courier is kidnapped and forced to become a drug mule. When she is exposed to the experimental chemicals she is smuggling, it boosts her intelligence and reflexes to superhuman levels. She uses her newfound abilities to get revenge on her captors, but as the process continues, she evolves into something more than human. Sci-fi thriller, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman.
