The Voice Kids 2023, 7:30 pm, ITV1

‘What’s up Voice Kids 2023?!’ yells will.i.am during a full-throttle rendition of Lenny Kravitz’s Are You Gonna Go My Way along with fellow coaches Pixie Lott, Danny Jones and Ronan Keating. And with that we’re launched straight into a new series of the junior (ages seven-14) talent show, with Emma Willis returning as host. As the blind auditions begin, each coach has four spaces to fill – will reigning champion Pixie pick yet another winner? Ronan says he’s looking for something different – and then the very next contestant delivers not only that but also, in Ronan’s words, ‘my favourite moment on The Voice Kids - ever’!

Casualty, 8:25 pm, BBC One

Sleeping with the boss is one thing; being falsely accused of sleeping with the boss who is actually your father is a whole other thing (ahh Soapland, never change)… Tonight, Jodie (Anna Chell) is so determined to keep secret the true nature of her relationship with Max (Nigel Harman) that she contemplates resigning and organises a leaving do at a local bar… But there’s an explosion at the pub and a terrified Max races to the scene – not before confessing the truth to Dylan (William Beck). Will Dylan keep their secret if Jodie and Max don’t live to tell it themselves?

Champion, 9:15 pm, BBC One

Set in south London and steeped in the world of rap music, this drama fizzing with talent, energy and original tracks sees a young woman step out of her brother’s shadow. Vita Champion (played brilliantly by newcomer Déja J Bowens) is an accomplished singer and musician who has always trailed behind her famous rap-star brother Bosco (Top Boy’s Malcolm Kamulete).

But when an opportunity to take centre stage arises, and with Vita’s resentment brewing, she takes it. Written by Queenie author Candice Carty-Williams and also starring singer Ray BLK as Vita’s outspoken best friend Honey, it’s a hugely promising first episode.

Crime season 2, 10:50 pm, ITV1

A passion project for Scottish actor Dougray Scott, this crime drama (previously shown on ITVX and BritBox) is adapted from the novel of the same name by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. It centres on DI Lennox (Scott), an Edinburgh cop haunted by the past who teams up with a new partner Amanda Drummond (Joanna Vanderham) to investigate the disappearance of a schoolgirl.

Lennox featured in Welsh’s earlier book Filth and the film version starred James McAvoy as a corrupt and misanthropic Edinburgh detective. The tone of Crime is more emotional, but this hard-hitting series retains Welsh’s distinctively dark comic touch and razor-sharp, authentic-sounding dialogue.

Best box set on TV tonight

And Just Like That season 2, Sky Comedy

The series follows best friends Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda in their 50s. Now older and wiser, they're all embarking on new adventures.

In season 1, Carrie's husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth) died of a heart attack in the first episode, setting Carrie on a collision course with life as a widow. Slowly but surely she's bouncing back and rediscovering herself, and trying to find love again.

The first two episodes dropped on Thursday, June 22 with episodes airing weekly.

Best film on TV tonight

Raiders of the Lost Ark, 6:45 pm, Film4

Intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones goes in search of the legendary Ark of the Covenant, a biblical artefact of devastating power. His quest leads him to Egypt, where the Nazis are plotting to use the Ark to further Hitler's plans for world domination - aided by Jones's deceitful French rival. The first of five big-screen action adventures, starring Harrison Ford as Indy, with Karen Allen, Paul Freeman and John Rhys-Davies.
