The story of The Pirate Bay, one of the leading download sites that opened the floodgates for what music streaming is today, will be dramatized in a new TV series going into production this fall, reports Variety.

Described as a “character-driven show,” The Pirate Bay will detail how the BitTorrent index came to fruition, with its Swedish founders Gottfrid Swartholm, Peter Sunde, and Fredrik Neij at the center of the 2003 file-sharing phenomenon.

LA and Stockholm-based B-Reel Films, responsible for such haunts like Midsommar, is teaming up with Dynamic Television and the Swedish public broadcasting station SVT for the production of the six-part series. Jens Sjögren will direct from a screenplay by head writer Piotr Marcimiak. Patrik Gyllström will serve as the episodic writer.

“It’s a classic rise and fall story, a tragedy about flying too close to the sun, but also a timeless story of a generational conflict,” said Marcimiak. Each episode features accurate information from interviews with Swartholm and Sunde, as well as archived material from the investigations into The Pirate Bay founders.

Sjögren added, “We are thrown between the driving perspectives — quick cuts between the basement full of computers to the conference rooms of Hollywood, from the offices in Washington via the concern felt at government offices in Stockholm, to meetings with financiers at Lake Geneva and then finally we’re back in the safety of the basement. A full throttle journey infused with paranoia, humor and deadly serious technical, emotional and political challenges.”

The Pirate Bay was a BitTorrent site allowing for copyrighted music, movies, software, and books to be widely — and illegally — spread among the masses on the internet, as a “stick it to the corporate man” movement of free information sharing. In all of their good-natured faith, Sunde, Neij, and Swartholm were targeted by those who sought to keep the dissipation of information at bay, no pun intended. Everyone from anti-piracy police to Interpol came for the co-founders, leading to their eventual arrest and downfall.

Anna Croneman, head of drama at SVT, noted how The Pirate Bay’s start was “the starting point for the shift between the analog world of entertainment to the streaming world of today.”

“For us, this series tells the story of how three young men basically changed the whole entertainment industry and makes us feel what the various stakeholders had to pay — politically, emotionally, and financially. At SVT, we find all this exciting and we are pretty sure the audience will too,” she said.

There isn’t an official release date as of yet, but stay tuned for more updates.
