Artist talk at 6:30; light hors d'oeuvres provided by Hotel Indigo. Hatfield is a mixed media artist inspired by her Southern surroundings. Most of her paintings are made from recycled materials.

First Friday at the Dinah: Opening at the paired exhibit spaces in the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center (620 Greenboro Ave., downtown Tuscaloosa) are Joe MacGown's "Explorations of Alternate Realities" (running Friday through Sept. 14) in the Arts Council Gallery, and Stephen Humphreys' "Broken Bridges ― Stephen Humphreys in Ukraine" (running through Sept. 15.).

At the Paul R. Jones Gallery, there's an exhibition of photographs, "May 1970: The Gibbs-Green Tragedy at Jackson State College," running through Sept. 19. It's a documentary of photos taken by civil rights activist Doris Derby in the days and weeks immediately following the killing of Phillip Gibbs and James Earl Green during police shootings on Jackson State campus, the night of May 14, 1970. There will be a reception Sept. 1. The exhibition is organized and sponsored by the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi.
