Terence Winter, who stepped down as showrunner of the Sylvester Stallone-starring mob drama Tulsa King after its first season, is back as a writer on Paramount+ series’ upcoming second season in addition to his continuing duties as an executive producer. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan, has opted not to bring in a replacement for Winter in line with the practice at the other Sheridan series produced by 101 Studios which don’t have a traditional showrunner. Instead, Tulsa King has hired a director/executive producer whose deal is still being finalized.

As Deadline reported a year ago, Winter stepped down from the showrunner post over creative differences with Sheridan. Winter, who had spoken about how much he enjoyed working with Stallone and loved the characters on the show, was to remain an executive producer on Tulsa King while focusing on other projects.

As the writers strike changed plans, Winter’s post-strike schedule allowed him to return to the show as a writer.

He continues to also work on his other current projects, Midge (co-writing and exec producing with Vincent Piazza the feature film for Appian Way), and A Murder in Hollywood (writing and producing the feature film; based on Casey Sherman same-name book; producing with Rachel Winter)

Winter is coming off co-writing, with Frank E. Flowers, the Paramount hit biopic Bob Marley: One Love, which just crossed the $100M mark in domestic box office.

Tulsa King, which is expected to start production shortly on Season 2 in Atlanta for a fall premiere, is executive produced by Sheridan, Winter, Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, and Braden Aftergood.

As announced yesterday, Season 1 of Tulsa King will air on CBS this summer leading to the series’ Season 2 launch on Paramount+.
