Tubi Hires Endeavor Exec For International Expansion

U.S. AVoD firm Tubi has hired David Salmon to become its Executive VP and Managing Director for International. The UK-based exec will report into Tubi CEO Anjali Sud. He’ll work on building out the business around the world, looking to capitalize on advertiser-funded growth in the streaming world. Salmon has spent more than a decade at Endeavor, where he was the founder and CTO of Endeavor Streaming, the agency’s video tech group. Tubi is currently available in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, Panama, Australia and New Zealand, and will be pushing into the UK and further into Latin America under Salmon’s guidance. “Tubi has an industry-leading position in the U.S. and we’re looking to replicate that success across international markets,” he said.

BritBox Bags Drama & Nears 3.5M Subs

Best of British streamer BritBox has acquired seasons one and two of BBC crime drama Blue Lights and season two of Trigger Point. The Blue Lights deal covers U.S. and Canada, while Trigger Point is U.S.-only. The news was announced at Content London yesterday, where BritBox CEO Reemah Sakaan also revealed the SVoD service has surpassed 3.4 million subscribers. This represents a 15% increase in membership in 2023 across its eight operating territories, which besides North America also include Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Jio Studios & Prime Video India Ready New Films

India’s Jio Studios and Prime Video have unveiled their latest film efforts. Jio Studios has put Marathi film Khashaba into production in Mumbai, with Nagraj Menjule directing. The film follows the life of Khashaba Dabasaheb Jadhav, who historic exploits in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics made him the first Indian to win an individual medal the Games. Worldwide release is slated for 2025. Prime Video, meanwhile, has revealed it will launch Hindi movie Mast Mein Rehne Ka globally on December 8. The movie, starring Neena Gupta and Jackie Shroff, and is billed as a “heartwarming narrative delving into the parallel universes of two distinct generations.” Written and directed by Vijay Maurya, it is produced by Payal Arora and Maurya under their banner, Made in Maurya.

Tencent Orders ‘Glow Up China’

Chinese streamer Tencent Video has moved into reality TV for the first time by ordering a local version of UK make-up star format Glow Up. The streaming giant’s show will premiere next month. Contestants will be judged by industry artists Tony Li and Xinmiao Chen and the series includes several star guests, including actress Zhao Lusi, singer Jike Junyi, make-up director Xiao Jin and fashion designer Lan Yu. This is the seventh local version of the Warner Bros International Television Production-shopped format, which was originally from Wall to Wall and for the BBC.

Jewish, Muslim & Arab Film & TV Workers Get UK Charity Support

The Film & TV Charity is planning to develop resources to better support Jewish, Muslim and Arab workers who have been impacted by the tragic events of the Israel-Hamas conflict. After a consultation with industry stakeholders in the UK, the charity will focus on mental health and wellbeing issues impacting the workforce. Since the Hamas-backed attack on Israel on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent retaliation in Gaza, the Metropolitan Police has recorded a huge rise in antisemitic incidents, while long-existing systemic problems relating to antisemitism and Islamophobia have been brought to light, the charity says. Film & TV Charity CEO Marcus Ryder said: “It is of critical importance that everyone in the industry, from every community, can access the support they need. To make sure this is the case for Jewish, Muslim, and Arab colleagues affected by the terrible events in Israel and Gaza, we have launched a consultation and have so far held a number of roundtables to ensure that people’s experiences are properly quantified and understood.”
