Trump Twitter Typo Had Him Bragging About His ‘Consensual Presidency’

Donald Trump tweeted a quote a New York Post editorial that talked about his “enormously consequential presidency.” But in retyping the quote, Trump slipped in a typo, calling his presidency “consensual.”

The column Trump quoted is titled “We’re still better off with Trump than Clinton” by Michael Goodwin. It discusses Michael Wolff’s tell-all book “Fire and Fury,” and Steve Bannon’s comments therein. Goodwin suggests that the book won’t be the thing that dooms Trump’s presidency, and in it he notes that “there has never been a day when I wished Hillary Clinton were president. Not one.”

“His is turning out to be an enormously consequential presidency,” Goodwin wrote.

Trump’s misquote of the editorial, which he’s since corrected on Twitter, changed its meaning pretty significantly.

“His is turning out to be an enormously consensual presidency. So much so that…there has never been a day that I wished Hillary Clinton were President. Not one,” Trump tweeted.

“Indeed, as Trump’s accomplishments accumulate, the mere thought of Clinton in the W.H., doubling down on Obama’s…failed policies, washes away any doubts that America made the right choice. This was truly a change election, and the changes Trump is bringing are far-reaching and necessary.”

It didn’t take long for Twitter users to have a heyday with the typo. The gaff was especially poignant as it popped up on the night of the 2018 Golden Globes, which was focused on the #TIMESUP movement, a push for protections and equal pay for women in the wake of numerous women reporting sexual misconduct by powerful men in Hollywood and beyond.

The joke of the night was the irony of Trump, who has his own laundry list of sexual misconduct allegations from numerous women, not really knowing what the word “consensual” means.

A few people pointed out that, given that Trump had 3 million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton despite winning the Electoral College, his presidency wasn’t quite what one might call “consensual.”

And who could resist tying Trump’s latest Twitter flub to his last set of weird tweets, in which he called himself a “stable genius.”
