Trump Took Aim at 'Will & Grace' Star Debra Messing Over Her Political Tweets

President Trump is slated to attend a Beverly Hills fundraiser during Emmys week later this month, an event for which tickets start at $1,000 and the chance to have a VIP upgrade and photo op with the president will go for $100,000. Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack called on social media for the publication of attendees' names—and Messing received a presidential Twitter mention in response.

Commenting on The Hollywood Reporter’s article about the event, McCormack tweeted a request that the publication "kindly report on everyone attending this event, so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with." His co-star Messing followed with a tweet of her own Saturday. "Please print a list of all attendees please," she wrote. "The public has a right to know."

Despite the fact that campaign donations are matters of public record, the tweets sparked allegations of McCarthyism from right-wing social media users similar to those that greeted Congressman Joaquin Castro’s publication of the names of Trump donors.

On Sunday morning, the president himself chimed in. "I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice, and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me 'Sir,'" Trump wrote on Twitter. "How times have changed!"

Messing has long been outspoken about her political views, and tweets frequently about politics. "It would just really go against my nature to have this platform and to just sort of sit back and ignore it," she told InStyle earlier this year. "I don't pretend to have any expertise. I don't report to have a more important voice than anybody else in the world. I just recognize that I have a louder voice than many."
