Citing an Internet hoax as fact, Trump claimed he knows how to stop Muslim terrorists.

On the eve of the South Carolina primary, Donald Trump told a new, offensive lie during a campaign speech-and this one is pretty yyyuge.

"You know, I read a story, it's a terrible story, but I'll tell you. Should I tell you or should I not?" Trump asked the crowd assembled in North Charleston, hinting that the candidate knew he would spark a media firestorm with his remarks.

Trump then told a tall tale about U.S. General John Pershing who, "took fifty bullets, and he dipped them in pig's blood," before executing 49 of 50 Muslim prisoners in the Philippines during a guerilla conflict with the United States in the early 1900s.

According to Trump, Pershing then told the 50th prisoner, "You go back to your people and you tell them what happened." Because any contact with swine is forbidden in the Muslim religion, this solved the problem of Muslim extremism, Trump claimed. Except, it didn't. The lie is from a 2011 email forwarding chain, and Snopes.com debunked it as a legend.

"By the way, this is something you can read in the history books. Not a lot of history books, because they don't like teaching this," Trump concluded. Yes, Donald, professors don't like teaching this story. Because it's untrue.
